Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, though Uganda’s smallest national park, has strategically positioned gates that provide access to its diverse ecosystems, iconic wildlife, and volcanic landscapes. Each gate serves specific trekking or cultural activities, ensuring that visitors can safely explore the park’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
The Muhabura Gate is the main entry point for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga, providing access to the park’s habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family. Located approximately 18 kilometers from Kisoro town, this gate is also the starting point for hikes to Mount Muhabura and Mount Gahinga, offering some of the most challenging and scenic trekking routes in Uganda.
Visitors entering through Muhabura Gate begin their journey through dense montane forests and bamboo zones, gradually ascending toward the volcano slopes. The gorilla trekking experience typically lasts between 2–6 hours, depending on the daily location of the Nyakagezi family. Guides provide essential safety briefings and instructions to minimize disturbance to the gorillas, while rangers ensure visitor compliance with park regulations.
Hiking enthusiasts can also use this gate to summit Mount Muhabura (4,127 m), Uganda’s tallest volcano within the park, and Mount Gahinga (3,474 m). These treks traverse multiple vegetation zones, from the lush lower montane forests to bamboo thickets and the unique Afro-alpine landscapes near the peaks. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Virunga Massif, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as opportunities to spot wildlife including golden monkeys, duikers, and a variety of bird species.
Muhabura Gate is equipped with ranger posts for permit verification, visitor orientation, and emergency support, ensuring that trekking and wildlife experiences are safe and well-managed. For those seeking adventure, this gate combines gorilla encounters, volcano climbing, and immersive nature experiences in a single route.
The Ntebeko Gate, located about 15 kilometers from Kisoro town, provides access to golden monkey trekking and the hike to Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 m). This gate is situated on the western side of the park and is surrounded by dense bamboo forests, which form the preferred habitat of the golden monkeys, one of the park’s most iconic and playful species.
Golden monkey treks from Ntebeko Gate typically last 2–4 hours, allowing visitors to observe the monkeys’ foraging habits, social interactions, and agility among the bamboo stands. Experienced park guides lead the treks, explaining the monkeys’ behavior, conservation status, and the ecological importance of the bamboo zone.
The same gate serves hikers aiming to summit Mount Sabyinyo, famous for its jagged, triangular peak straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Sabinyo hike is moderately challenging, taking 4–6 hours round-trip, and passes through multiple vegetation zones, including montane forests, bamboo thickets, and Afro-alpine moorlands. Along the trail, hikers can enjoy scenic views of the Virunga volcanic range, crater lakes, and rare wildlife sightings.
Ntebeko Gate is also a hub for eco-tourism and cultural engagement, providing access to nearby Batwa community experiences and forest walks. Rangers stationed here manage visitor safety, verify trekking permits, and offer guidance to ensure both wildlife protection and a high-quality visitor experience.
The Kisoro Office, located in the heart of Kisoro town, serves as the central hub for all reservations and administrative activities for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Although it is not a physical park entrance, this office is essential for organizing visits, securing permits, and planning treks to the park’s famous gorilla families, golden monkeys, and volcanic trails. Visitors must obtain all permits here before proceeding to the various park gates, ensuring a smooth and safe experience while adhering to park regulations.
At the Kisoro Office, visitors can obtain gorilla trekking permits for the habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family, which is the park’s main gorilla attraction. The office also issues golden monkey trekking permits, which allow small groups to explore the bamboo zones where these playful primates live. In addition, hikers planning to summit Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, or Mount Sabyinyo can secure volcano hiking permits at the office. Staff provide guidance on trail conditions, seasonal weather patterns, and wildlife activity, helping visitors plan their treks efficiently.
The office is conveniently situated in Kisoro town, making it easily accessible to travelers coming from Kabale, about 55 kilometers away, or other parts of southwestern Uganda. From the office, visitors arrange transportation to the park gates — including Muhabura, Ntebeko, and Gahinga — which are the starting points for gorilla trekking, golden monkey treks, and volcano hikes. Local transport options such as taxis, private vehicles, and tour operators are readily available, ensuring that visitors can reach the park gates safely and comfortably.
